Bangladesh will celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr on Wednesday making the end of Islam’s holy month of Ramadan.
The final announcement came around 11.00 pm on Tuesday as the Shawwal moon has been sighted by the National Moon Sighting Committee.
Earlier, around 8.45 pm, Sheikh Md Abdullah, state minister for Religious Affairs and Moon Sighting Committee Chairman, said the new crescent moon was sighted nowhere in the country.
Thousands of Bangladeshi people have been scrambling to Dhaka’s ferry terminals and stations, packing trains heading out of the city to return to their hometowns for Eid.
Like the start of Ramadan, during which believers abstain from eating and drinking during daylight hours, Eid-al-Fitr depends on the sighting of the moon and its celebration varies in different countries. The day begins with early morning prayers and then family visits and feasts.
